Young Arts

Young Arts is an initiative of the Arts Society which aims to inspire young people with a lasting enthusiasm for the arts together with an awareness of our immense cultural and artistic heritage.

St Peters School.  We were delighted to support St Peters School, Southbourne, with their trip to Cornwall for 6th Form art students.  While there, they were able to visit Tate St Ives, the Barbara Hepworth Museum and sculpture gardens, among many other art related projects, including attending workshops.

6th Form Art Lecture at the Arts University Bournemouth.  This lecture series, which has been running since 2018, has become an extremely popular part of the curriculum for 6th Form art students in East Dorset, giving them a taste of university style lectures and a visit to a university campus.  Last year's Lecture was about Street Art, which held the students spell bound.  Each year we have tried to explore different aspects of art such as painting, sculpture, women in art or lack of.  This year it was the turn of Photography and was given by Antony Penrose.  The subject was his mother Lee Miller and the impact on all those present was breathtaking.   He gave us all a fascinating incite into this amazing woman and her desire to portray the atrocities of war.  It was particularly topical as the film Lee has just come out on general release.

What is particularly exciting is that this project was again jointly sponsored by the three local Art Societies in this area - Wimborne & Blandford, Poole and ourselves Bournemouth & East Dorset.

As always the lecture was followed by tea in the University Refectory with homemade cakes made by our wonderful members.

Sandford St Martin's School, Wareham.  We were delighted to enable this school to have another visit of the Magic Lantern Company as the teacher had found the previous visit so rewarding for their students.  This is a tool for encouraging students to express themselves and they are able to:

use art history as a learning tool across the whole curriculum

develop speaking, listening, critical thinking and observational skills

help children learn to enjoy famous works of art
