The Arts Society Of Wimbourne & Blandford are arranging a visit to the Cezanne exhibition at Tate Modern in London and would be delighted to welcome any of our members who would like to come along.

Visitors to Tate Modern’s, Cezanne, are promised a ‘once-in-a-generation’ opportunity to experience the achievements of this incomparable post-impressionist painter from the southern city of Aix-en-Provence who, in the 1860s, was determined to succeed as an artist in metropolitan Paris. Perhaps we think we already know the works of Cezanne, but this show offers many rarely seen examples of his iconic still-life paintings, landscapes and portraits from collections across the world.

This trip to the historic town of Greenwich is being organised by the Wimborne and Blandford Arts Society and they would be delighted to welcome anyone interested in joining them for the day.

Although the town is widely known for lending its name to the Greenwich Meridian, it is also celebrated as the site of Henry VIII’s Palace of Plancentia, built in the 15th Century: this was the birthplace of Elizabeth 1. On this trip you will be free to enjoy your choice of the many attractions to be found in this small but world-famous borough of South London on the River Thames. We will start with an introduction beside the Royal Observatory, on the brow of the hill that overlooks the historic centre and from where you can see most of the venues shown on the list attached. Once you have got your bearings we will take the short walk downhill to where we will disperse and explore the town at leisure.

Our winter visit is a short trip to Southampton. The Tudor House, one of the city’s most important historic buildings, reveals over 800 years of history in the heart of the Old Town. The timber-framed building was built in the late 15th Century, together with King John’s Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from Tudor House Garden, dating back a further 300 years.

Southampton City Art Gallery is an outstanding gallery in the South of England and is internationally renowned for its impressive collection and temporary exhibitions. The works on display, of both historic and contemporary art, show the breadth and quality of the City’s art treasures. The exhibition on show is ‘Beyond the Brotherhood: The Pre-Raphaelite Legacy’.

Exeter has one of the oldest and most beautiful Cathedrals in England. Located in the centre of the city, there has been a cathedral on the present site for nearly one thousand years.

The building itself is a remarkable feat of engineering, design and craftsmanship. It has the longest stretch of unbroken Gothic vaulting in the world, stunning stained glass windows and an intricately carved image screen on the West Front. We will have a 75 minute tour of the Cathedral Ground Floor.

An optional addition is The Roof Tour (90 minutes) going into the roof void above the Nave, into the south tower, the Lead Room and the Ringing Chamber and through the spaces in the north tower.

This visit is to the National Trust property of Polesden Lacey on the North Downs near Dorking.

The Regency house was transformed into a superb Edwardian mansion by brewery heiress Mrs Ronald Greville. A glittering array of formal rooms are decorated with fabulous portraits including works by Raeburn and Reynolds. Her collection of fine paintings, furniture, porcelain and silver is displayed in the reception rooms and galleries, as it was at the time of her celebrated house parties.

The house was furnished in opulent style, but not in any coherent fashion, the decoration being acquired from other country houses and historic properties.

There are extensive grounds comprising a walled rose garden, lawns, ancient woodland and landscape walks.

Our Spring visit is to The Weald & Downland Living Museum near Chichester.

The buildings located at the museum were all threatened with destruction and, as it was not possible to find a way to preserve them at their original sites, were carefully dismantled, conserved and rebuilt in their historical form at the museum. The 40-acre site has more than 50 historic buildings, from a replica Anglo-Saxon hall house to an Edwardian tin church

The collection of buildings represents almost a thousand years of rural life in south-east England: furnished just as they would have been in the past – complete with roaring fires – the homes, farms and public buildings. Along with the buildings, there are "hands-on" activities, like cooking, and weaving. There are demonstrations, including milling in the 17th century watermill, cooking in the Tudor kitchen, blacksmithing in the Victorian smithy.
